John's biological mother, Rose, met John's biological father at a dance on her 16th birthday. The young man was a sailor from the north of Norway. Rose's family was strict Catholics of Irish heritage. Rose's father was a headmaster at a Catholic school, and her mother stayed home with the 9 children. Rose was the oldest of them. They lived in Brooklyn, New York where many ships came to the harbour every day. Rose liked to watch the ships and the busy life in the harbour, and every day after school she went to the harbour, staring at the sea longing for a better life.
